Traveller’s Yarn: The Travel Enthusiast Gathering

–> For the blog, head over here.

When you’re a traveller, this will likely sound familiar: While exploring some corner of the world, sooner or later, you will bump into other travellers. You strike up a conversation with them. You quickly realise you’re on the same wavelength. Perhaps you’ll sit around the campfire or in the hostel kitchen late into the night, telling each other stories about your travels and past adventures. — What we call traveller’s yarn. By the end, you’ve not only made a new friend, but you’ve also got your head full of ideas about where you absolutely must travel next. We want to bring these encounters home – in the form of a gathering made by travellers for travellers: the Traveller’s Yarn Meet-up.

You’ll receive an invitation to our WhatsApp group, where you’ll find further information and updates about the meet-up.

All The Details:

Dreikretscham Fisherman’s Mill
Easy to spot: the Traveller’s Yarn venue, the Dreikretscham Fisherman’s Mill

When will Traveller’s Yarn take place?

On the first weekend in October, that is, from 2 to 4 October 2026.

Where will Traveller’s Yarn take place?

On the beautiful grounds of the Fischermühle in the picturesque village of Dreikretscham, Germany.

The Fischermühle is an old mill yard located in the central Sorbian region of Saxonia, near Bautzen. Currently it is being renovated as a place of community by the owning society, supported by donations, volunteers and funding programmes.

What’s on the programme?

Nothing (yet), and that’s how we want it! 🙂 We’ll put the programme together on the spot. All participants are invited to share their adventures or to run a workshop – whether it’ll be about a grand journey to Tibet or an adventure in the woods behind your doorstep. You don’t need to be professional speakers either! None of us are, and the gathering will deliberately have a pleasantly small, intimate feel to it. No need for stage fright. But even the little stories — the traveller’s yarn — will have their place, at the breakfast table, by the fire or between hammocks.

How much is the admission?

First of all: we are not aiming to make a profit. However, we do have some expenses, so we will be charging a small fee of 20 Euros per adult visitor. Children/anyone under 18 don’t need to pay admission. Should there be any money left over at the end, it will be used towards the renovation of the historic Fischermühle.

How big will Traveller’s Yarn be?

A maximum of 50 people. Above all, we want one thing: to inspire one another. Our ideal scenario is that, by the end of the weekend, everyone will have had a chat with everyone. We reckon this works best when the group stays small. For you, that also means: sign up quickly, as tickets are limited!

Is it a van life, overlanding or backpacking meet-up?

Yes! And no. We explicitly don’t want to focus on any particular way of travel. The more variation, the better! So whether you’re travelling by van, motorbike, bike, on foot or use a flying carpet: you’re equally welcome and will be a great addition to the meet-up!

What facilities will be available?

Fischermühle campsite
This is where we’ll be camping: the lads are already giving the grass a trim

First of all, there are two really, really lovely meadows for camping. There are also toilets, showers and running water. If the weather’s bad, we can also gather inside the mill to stay out of the elements. And we’ll be putting up teepees!

What’s for dinner?

We’re planning Traveller’s Yarn as a self-catering event. In other words: you’ll need to bring your own food. Anyone who’d like to cook for others is, of course, very welcome to do so – and will collect globetrotter karma points. 🙂 There’ll also be a long table for meals. And there will be fire barrels – from experience, these are where traveller’s yarn is spun best. In the mornings, we’re planning a donation-based bread roll service.

I don’t have a tent!

We can arrange a place for you to sleep. Just let us know on the registration form that you’re coming without a tent.

Will there be power outlets?

You’ll for sure be able to charge your electronic devices. However, the site is not a campsite with a full-scale electrical supply. If you absolutely need constant power – like for medical equipment – we’ll find a solution.

How can I get to Traveller’s Yarn by public transport?

The nearest station is Bautzen. Please let us know if you’d like to travel by train. We’ll pick you up from the station.

What else is in store?

Fischermühle community area
Here we’re planning a community area with a long table, fire pits and space for everyone to get together

We’re still in the middle of planning. We want this to be an event for everyone to participate, so we’re open to your ideas! When you register, join the WhatsApp group where we’ll be sharing updates with you.

Who is welcome?

Anyone – and we mean anyone – who is loves to discover the world with open eyes and an open heart.

Can I bring children?

We’d love you to! There’ll definitely be children. We’re parents ourselves and we’re sure other families will be joining as well. There’s plenty of space for the kids to run about, a large trampoline and a football goal. Perhaps we can even organise a few children’s activities together?

Are dogs allowed?

Yes, as long as they’re chill around big and more importantly small humans.

Who are you, anyway?

Firstly, there’s Johannes, who also writes this blog. Not only whilst on the road, but also whilst attending – and in some cases helping to organise – numerous van life, adventure and overlanding gatherings over the years, an idea gradually took shape in the back of his mind: That of a gathering where the focus is on the travellers and their journeys, rather than on gear.

Then there’s Rahel, her husband Richard and their two boys. As a family, they’ve spent the last two years travelling the length and breadth of Eastern Europe, Turkey, the Caucasus, the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa in the best motorhome of all, Molly. Along the way – both whilst travelling and through alternative housing projects – they’ve made all sorts of new friends. Their latest project is the Dreikretscham Fisherman’s Mill, which they’re currently transforming into a community hub.

I’d love to lend a hand!

We’re delighted to hear that! Just tick the relevant box on the registration form.

How can I keep up to date?

That’s the gist of it for now. There’s a WhatsApp group for the meet-up, where we’ll give you further details and keep you up to date with the preparations.
